Five of our favorite Orlando haunted attractions

Our picks for the best haunted attractions for 2013

Seth Kubersky, our resident Halloween expert and Live Active Cultures columnist, has been to pretty much every creepy haunt in town. We asked him to rank his top five favorite haunts, and here’s what he told us:

5. Tie: Cabin in the Woods (Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Orlando, halloweenhorrornights.com) and Death Water Bayou (Howl-O-Scream at Busch Gardens Tampa, seaworldparks.com/en/howloscream-tampa)
Universal did gory justice to Drew Goddard’s mind-trip movie, and Busch raised the bar with Cajun creativity.

4. Legends: A Haunting in Old Town (Old Town, Kissimmee, legendsoldtown.com)
Orlando has a year-round haunt again, and it’s got a ghoulish sense of humor to go with its animatronic ghosts and goblins.

3. The Experiment at Howl-O-Scream (Busch Gardens Tampa, seaworldparks.com/en/howloscream-tampa)
Equal parts Saw and Fear Factor, this innovative interactive experience made me go places (like the bowl of a filthy toilet) that I hope I never have to revisit.

2. An American Werewolf in London (Halloween Horror Nights, Universal Orlando, halloweenhorrornights.com)
A fright film fan’s bloody wet dream comes to life with Landis-approved puppets, Mickey Mouse, the TARDIS and See You Next Wednesday in the (sadly blurred) flesh.

1. The Shallow Grave (Winter Haven, theshallowgrave.com)
The only house this year that truly made me jump, this family affair reached out and touched me – literally! – with scenery and scares that were worth the long drive.
