First Words: Readers weigh in on our intern’s blog about fighting in Fallujah and Gov. Rick Scott’s poverty problem

Sad sacks

I’m just one of those 230,000 sad sacks about whom Scott cares very little, if any (“Rick Scott’s poverty problem,” Jan. 8). I haven’t received a payment in over two months, and it’s nearly impossible to reach anyone at any of the numbers available. Even when I have gotten in touch with someone, they can never help me and just say they will send an email or request my case be looked at ASAP. What a joke!

Our intern fought in Fallujah

Thank you for your willingness to serve our country, Marine (“Our intern fought in Fallujah: one Marine’s story,” Jan. 10). I wish you hadn’t been sent somewhere that didn’t really serve our interests, but I respect the hell out of you for going. I was lucky in that my entire service (Army, Infantry) fell in between GW1 and GW2, and I never got caught up in any of the police actions like Bosnia.

I hope Fred is on a paid internship and that you offer him a full-time position after he has finished. He deserves it.
