Bills filed for the 2013 Florida legislative session that we think you should know about

Bill: House Bill 325 – School Safety
Sponsored by: Linda Stewart, D-Orlando
Date filed: Jan. 18
What it says: HB 325 establishes 500-foot school-safety zones around education facilities within which even those who have concealed-carry gun permits are not allowed to bring firearms. The bill also directs state sales tax dollars from gun purchases into a trust fund that would be created by Stewart's accompanying bill HB 327; money from that trust fund would be utilized for school-safety guidance programs and to cover the cost of enforcement.
What we say: The horror of Newtown is still fresh on the minds of parents across the country, so this is a noble effort at allaying some of those concerns. Also, the indirect shot at the gun lobby, taking its tax lemons and turning them into lemonade, is well played.
Odds of passage: Unlikely. So far there is no matching Senate bill, and the tone in the Republican legislature isn't likely to shift from rampant gun enthusiasm anytime soon.
