No praise for Lily Allen’s ‘Sheezus’

Album review: Lily Allen’s ‘Sheezus’

Lily Allen
Parlophone Records Limited
★ (out of 5 stars)

Lily grabbed headlines before this album’s release by agreeing with a fan that the singles her label released were “rubbish” and that they were too scared to put out the better material. Now that Sheezus is upon us, some are still wondering about this phantom “better material.” Allen hasn’t lost her kittenish charm, but Sheezus is too lightweight – in terms of songwriting and production – to exist as a proper follow-up to 2009’s whimsical It’s Not Me, It’s You. Several savvier divas have risen since, and Allen shoots herself in the foot by name-checking them all in the first chorus of this album’s opener. At least that’s more tolerable than “URL Badman,” Lily’s tone-deaf takedown of bloggers that sounds like it fell out of 2002. On the plus side, I’m sure the peppy love note “As Long as I Got You” will work great in some movie where a small girl befriends a wayward circus animal.
