Local girl punk trio Wet Nurse back up their buzz on debut record

Almost immediately after they first emerged in late 2010, it was pretty evident that Wet Nurse might be something special, but now that they've spent the past couple years cutting their teeth and lighting up Orlando's DIY punk circuit, it's an established fact that the twin-fronted trio of Nina Chaplin (guitar, vocals), Susana Chaplin (bass, vocals) and Vanessa Brewster (drums) is quite possibly the area's most auspicious girl punk band to emerge in years. And this album, the first full-length release for Italian femme-punk label Astro Girl, is the long-form testament to that.

Daily Whatever bursts with lively garage-punk nuggets that sparkle with vim, bounce and tons of pop instinct. Wet Nurse's immediate and infectious way with melody is rooted in lots of classic pop and rock & roll traditions. Although distinctly feminine and sweet, this isn't exactly pink ribbons and bubblegum – no, too much attitude here for that shit. And though their style is anything but pristine, these girls are solid. Their triumph is in knowing that striking the right balance means maintaining enough scuffed spontaneity to thrill without falling victim to the old punk chestnut of fetishizing amateurishness simply for the sake of image.

Free of any need for nuance or patience, the album starts with the pedal fully mashed and more or less doesn't settle until there's silence. The choicest cuts are the rubber-burning rock & roll of "My Nature" and the black leather-jacketed '60s girl-group sounds of "Bon Voyage," "Randy Kelly" and "Peace Treaty."

Wet Nurse's flame has been undeniably bright ever since they splashed onto the scene. But by validating their considerable hype, this much-anticipated full-length debut shows that the ladies have only sharpened their attack since then. It rips, it bops and it comes on white vinyl (at least for the first lucky 100 people to buy it).
