Danny Brown

Detroit hip-hop artist plays the Beacham this week

You might call Danny Brown a latter-day ODB. Between his goofy adenoidal delivery and over-the-top lyrical forays – which include forcing Sarah Palin to fellate him until she hiccups – Brown resurrects the humorous idiosyncratic spirit of not just Old Dirty Bastard, but goofballs like Slick Rick, Flavor Flav and Kool Keith. While they traffic in funny characters and outrageous situations, Brown more closely resembles gangsta rappers. Only his rhymes are so outrageous as to bypass bragging into comedic overstatement. That's by design.

The Detroit native grew up among gangstas. He rejected typical braggadocio as too banal for a place where drug dealing was de rigueur. Instead he wanted to make the street-corner clockers laugh, constructing this whole persona from the voice to the brash witty rhymes.
Brown started in the early aughts with the act Rese'vor Dogs, and drew interest from Roc-A-Fella before that fell through. Brown made his album debut with 2010's The Hybrid, and followed last year with XXX, released as a free download. It took off critically, with Spin calling it hip-hop album of the year. He's currently out with headliner A$AP Rocky, whose lurid rhymes and trap star clichés are what Brown seems to satirize.

As for Brown's third album, due next year, he's calling it, appropriately enough, ODB.
