Neigh-saying: 'Bojack Horseman' offers up star-studded satire

Netflix has struck gold with its original content recently, and Bojack Horseman is the streaming service’s latest glittering example. With an all-star cast featuring Will Arnett, Aaron Paul, Alison Brie and Amy Sedaris, how the hell could it go wrong? The premise: A washed up horse (Arnett), once a popular ’80s sitcom star, lives out his midlife crisis with his live-in “house guest,” Todd (Paul). Shenanigans and animal puns ensue. To be honest, the characters are all one big vessel for heavy-handed statements on media and pop culture, weaving in and out of the lives of greedy agents, drugged-up teen stars and troops demanding hero status when they come home from war (yeesh!). Not all of the jokes land, but you can’t deny the razor-sharp wit of the script and the voice talent behind it. At the end of the day, Bojack Horseman has the potential to be stiff competition for animated romps like Family Guy and South Park – even if it does shamelessly borrow methods from both.
