This week: Healthy Greek Eats, Food Trucks for Fairness, Crooked Spoon Gastropub and a new breastaurant hits I-Drive
Published: June 19, 2013
Lovers of all things Greek, especially the cuisine, will want to attend the “Taste-Test Social” at Downtown Credo in College Park June 28. Local brand Healthy Greek Eats will lay out quite the, ahem, spread of gluten-free and vegan-friendly meze, including hummus, spicy feta dip, tzatziki and homemade Greek yogurt. The event takes place from 8-11 p.m. and features blind taste tests, live demos and edible take-homes. A donation to Downtown Credo is all it takes to attend.
Get on the bandwagon! The Food Trucks for Fairness Facebook page, launched in response to the rules the city of Orlando has imposed to regulate the food truck industry, received more than 600 likes in less than 24 hours, and has more than a thousand likes as I write this. According to the page, the Falcon in Thornton Park is the first “casualty” – the owners opted not to host food trucks outside their place of business because of all the new paperwork required.
Another food-truck casualty: The Crooked Spoon. The good news is that chef-owner Steve Saelg will follow in the footsteps of the former Red Eye BBQ truck by opening a permanent space to showcase the Spoon’s skills: Look for the Crooked Spoon Gastropub to open late next month in Clermont.
I was at the Caribbean Sunshine Bakery on West Colonial Drive the other day getting my fix of Jamaican beef patties when I noticed that the bakery space now houses a soul-food joint. The Sunshine Soul Food Café serves up all the goodies: ribs, oxtail, pork chops, fried chicken, collards and some damn fine-looking mac & cheese.
Garibaldi Mexican Restaurant has moved a few doors down into larger digs on Semoran Boulevard … recently shuttered Eola mainstays Prickly Pear and Nick’s Italian Kitchen will make the move to I-Drive … Social Chameleon, which just moved into the former Redlight Redlight space on Bennett Road, has closed.
Mitchell’s Fish Market has undergone a menu and interior design refresh … Twin Peaks, a breastaurant à la Hooters, has opened on I-Drive, if you give a hoot.
