Rock the Tot, Chomp Chomp Pizza, Hubbly Bubbly Falafel Shop, and beer fests galore

Bar Louie plans to redefine “carbo loading” Thursday, Sept. 19, during their Rock the Tot tater-tot eating contest. The event begins with a team challenge (four people must eat four pounds of tots) and moves on to a solo trial, as the bar attempts to set a world record for most tots eaten simultaneously. Top five winners get a trip to Cleveland to compete in the national contest. Dare to dream, spudboys and -girls.

Wreckers Sports Bar at the Gaylord Palms Resort teams up with Orlando Brewing to host a beer pairing dinner Sept. 27 from 7-9 p.m. The six-course affair pairs organic beers with ingredients sourced from local farms and ranches. Tickets are just $25.95.

In the spirit of Oktoberfest, another beer event – the inaugural Jake’s Beer Festival, 5-9 p.m. Oct. 4 at the Lowes Royal Pacific Resort – will feature all-you-can-handle beer and food (wurst, sauerbraten, pretzels, chicken & waffles) for a little over $40 per person. Some of the featured brewers: Breckenridge, Left Hand, Weihenstephan, Shipyard and Cigar City, who’ll be bringing my personal fave – their Marshal Zukhov Russian Imperial Stout (2012 and 2013).

A South American eatery will soon join the new South Asian restaurants that have opened in the Orlando Square Plaza on Sand Lake Road and OBT. Look for Bife de Chorizo, a grill named after the popular Argentinean strip steak, to open in the former Cold Stone Creamery space.

Sept. 23 marks Family Day: A Day to Eat Dinner With Your Children – a national effort to promote family dinners as an effective way to prevent substance abuse among children and teens. Do your part and stand up for sitting down.

BRIEFLY:

Look for the Fresh Market in Winter Springs to open in early 2014 … Chomp Chomp Pizza, specializing in 9-inch pizzas baked in less than three minutes, has opened in the former House of Kabob space on Fairbanks Avenue … Over in College Park, Hubbly Bubbly Falafel Shop is open for business … Whether you keep kosher or not, check out the newly opened Glatt Kosher Grill on I-Drive.
