Nosh Pit: Our favorite tastes around town

This week, Artichoke Red’s Dillos

Photo: N/A, License: N/A

Snack lovers still moping over the Hostess bankruptcy can breathe easy. Artichoke Red, which recently moved into a bigger space on Edgewater, now stocks gluten-free, vegan snack cakes known as Dillos that imitate those childhood treats. (These may not last through the zombie apocalypse, but they also won't do anything too scary to your body.) Yes, vegan gluten-free pastries are typically dense pseudo-cakes that taste like lies, but this is a whole new class of snack cakes: the Razdillo (like a raspberry Zinger!) and the ¡Dillo de chocolate mexicano! (with a dark chocolate cake and spicy chocolate cream filling) are near-perfect. Other flavors include chai tea and a traditional vanilla-on-vanilla Twinkie-like substitute.
