LAZY MOON PIZZA

SAT question: Pizza is to college as: A) experimentation is to dorm life; B) douchebaggery is to frat; C) functional illiteracy is to NCAA; D) broke-ass is to post-grad.

The correct answer, of course, is E) all of the above – though I’m sure there are plenty of broke-ass undergrads who would object. In fact, many such impecunious matriculants appear to congregate on the spacious new grounds of Lazy Moon Pizza for one of the best deals to be had near the UCF campus – the “Boxcar Willy.” For a mere $4.25, you get a meal fit for a hobo: that is, a giant honkin’ slice of cheese pizza and a 16-ounce can of PBR.

Uber-popular Lazy Moon arguably serves the largest slices in town – they’re astronomical in size. Biting into one won’t have you spewing superlatives, but the variety of options available by the slice is worth noting, and sampling. “Jason’s Mom’s Slice” ($7), for example, blends a subtly sweet sauce with chicken, sautéed mushrooms, caramelized onions, tomatoes and baked ranch. It certainly trumped the chili ($6) and spicy barbecue chicken ($6) slices, though both met the basic requirements for a decent piece of pie. Same goes with the Hawaiian Pork Melt ($7). The doughy calzone of mojo pork, bacon, pineapple, mozzarella and more of Jason’s Mom’s Sauce (available at the Meat House in Winter Park), while satisfying, left us a tad underwhelmed. What really surprised us was how addictive, and small, the caramel-filled stroopwafels ($1) were. We expected Frisbee-sized, not puck-sized, rounds, but either way, they were a real Dutch treat.

The 15-odd beer selections on tap rotate often, and there are nearly 50 more available by the bottle, underscoring the fact that Lazy Moon thinks big. It’s a big space, with big pizzas and a big selection of brews, and to the throngs of collegians dining here, it would appear that size definitely matters.
