Despite its provocative title and calendar proximity to the city-sponsored Orlando Film Festival, this new addition to the viewing circuit is not out to compete against anything else or antagonize anyone, the way some new festivals were this year (cough Orange You Glad cough). “We’re doing this because we love film, not for profit or anything,” says Juan C. Lopez, owner of Orlando Tattoo Company, which is also New Concept Art Gallery, which is also one of the venues. “We’re just doing our own thing.” Lopez and festival director Martijn Berndsen, both of whom have “worked in film for years,” according to Lopez, came up with the idea after screening a film from Troma co-founder and longtime Berndsen cohort Lloyd Kaufman. Kaufman’s latest, Poultrygeist (see “Kaufman digs zombie chicks!,” Feb. 21, 2008), will be shown, along with work from Lopez and filmmakers from Nebraska to Italy. At a suggested $1 per day of screenings, it’s certainly worth the price to see if this upstart could become a regular occurrence.
