This epic instrumental post-rock trio contrives a sound suggestive of tantric sex – long, often subtle buildups to a massive, wall-shaking climax. They’ve released three albums since forming five years ago, continuing to hone their tension-release sensibility. It’s a style that’s seen a jump in membership of late, but they carve out their own niche. They’re not as heavy or angular as acts like Godspeed You Black Emperor, Isis or Explosions in the Sky, preferring a more melodic undercurrent with a bit of space-rock expansiveness and more propulsive tempos than their peers. Over time they’ve tempered their metal influences, pursuing muted, elegant beauty reminiscent of Japanese watercolor art. Indeed, the driving characteristic of their new album, Geneva, is its organic shape, drawing measured breaths and billowing outward like a plume of smoke in the aftermath of an explosion.
