It’s hard to believe it’s been six years since Minnesota’s only albino Muslim rapper, Brother Ali, charmed the pants off a generation of backpackers with the song “Forest Whitiker,” an unstoppably feel-good track that detailed every blemish, wart and “neck full of razor bumps” that should have made Ali’s life a tough one to manage – and that’s not even mentioning his lazy eye, misshapen head and other self-professed turnoffs. Ali was a breath of fresh air in an indie hip-hop world that had weighed itself down with amateurish political leanings and mopey depression (both of which plagued Ali’s later records) because he delivered the laundry list of imperfections with cheerful aplomb. Brother Ali disappeared for years shortly thereafter, only to return in 2007 with the stale The Undisputed Truth. It turns out, though, that the album was merely an act of getting back into fighting shape; Ali’s recently released Us is full of bright life again, seeing the MC spitting with more intricacy and verve than ever.
