Snap 2013: The Light Painters
Aurora Crowley, Vicky DaSilva, Stephen Knapp, Patrick Rochon
Published: May 1, 2013
This year’s exhibit is titled Motion to Light, so it isn’t surprising that light painters, photographers who manipulate time and space to make light a tangible presence, comprise a large segment of the invited artists. Red Bull and Snap collaborated on the Illume Project, in which Rochon and DaSilva captured high-speed images of wakeboarders with lights strapped to their boards, resulting in candy-striped abstractions of the essence of motion (a video can be seen at snaporlando.com). Emerging artist Crowley uses a technique similar to DaSilva’s to create fine hairlike nets around her subjects’ faces; Knapp’s work combines carefully placed dichroic glass and precisely focused beams of light to create “paintings” (see “Looking at light,” Feb. 20, 2013, our review of an OMA show in which Knapp’s work is prominently featured). Vicki DaSilva, Stephen Knapp and Patrick Rochon will be present at the Friday night opening of Motion to Light, and DaSilva will take part in the Salon Talk artists’ Q&A. Both Knapp (1:45 p.m.) and Rochon (4:15 p.m.) lecture at OMA Saturday.
