New hires at Bach Festival Society, locals find luck in NYC, “Key of E” and Urban Art Museum
Culture to Go: local performing arts news
Published: August 14, 2013
Florida’s economic recovery continues to lag behind the country at large (thanks, Gov. Scott!) but the Bach Festival Society is doing its part to improve Orlando’s employment statistic with a spate of hiring. Zac Alfson moves from marketing and grants manager at Mad Cow Theatre (where he won an “Emerging Leader” award from Americans for the Arts) to become BFS’ patron engagement manager. Musician Dan Flick has taken the role of program and education manager, and Hope Forconi (formerly of Orlando Science Center) is now full-time executive assistant.
Some other talent locals have found luck lately in New York City: 2010 Timber Creek High School graduate Jeremy Pope made his off-Broadway debut last month in Choir Boy, a play with music by Tarell Alvin McCraney that concluded its run at the Manhattan Theatre Club Aug. 11, and Janine Klein brought her Orlando Fringe Festival-spawned Gay Bar Star to SoHo for a successful two-night stand at the Duplex.
If you are lucky enough to have paying work, consider kicking some cash to a worthy local arts project. Key of E, Andy Matchett and Corey Volence’s post-apocalyptic Fringe musical, makes a five-night comeback Aug. 23-30 at the Venue (with Joel and Amanda Warren joining the cast), raising funds through Kickstarter to release a cast album. Around the corner and down Mills Avenue a bit, the Mills 50 Main Street district, Process Architecture and Jai Gallery have teamed up to create an Urban Art Museum – find the project on Kickstarter to fund the first public art installation of a planned 50.
