Focus Exhibition: Lockwood de Forest's "The Wreck" A recent gift to the museum, de Forest's large oil painting depicts a grim desert landscape: Bedouin riders pass on the horizon, while the foreground is dominated by a picked-clean camel carcass. (A pun: Camels were known as "the ship of the desert.") De Forest, though related by friendship and family to the painters of the Hudson River School, was deeply affected by a tour of Egypt, Syria and Greece he took in 1875; his artistic course was diverted to focus on Orientalism and the study of East Indian decorative design, eventually leading to a partnership in Louis Comfort Tiffany's Allied Artists firm. 9:30 am-4 pm Tuesday; Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art, 445 N. Park Ave., Winter Park; $5; 407-645-5311; morsemuseum.org.
