Think global, gift local: our 2013 holiday gift guide

RIYL (recommended if you like) gift ideas for everybody on your list

If they think it’s just not Christmas without a holiday choir burbling in the background 24/7, try the Bach Festival Society’s All Is Bright: A Choral Christmas CD. The 21 tracks include “Joy to the World,” “We Three Kings,” “Carol of the Bells” and all the hits sung by local choristers under the direction of Dr. John V. Sinclair; the cover illustration of Rollins College’s Knowles Memorial Chapel was painted by Florida artist Dean Quigley. ($16; list of stores or online ordering available at bachfestivalflorida.org; also downloadable at iTunes store)

If they like men who smell as good as they look (or look as good as they smell), then buy everything you can from Winter Park-based mens’ outfitter Cloak and Dapper. All we have to say is “Damn Handsome Beer Soap.” Drops the mic. (cloakanddapper.us, $4.97-$239)

If they like their holidays with a little bit of horror, then buy some alternative Christmas cards from My Featured Creature. Local horror junkie Denna Beena (of Spooky Empire fame) has launched a new series of holiday cards featuring local artists that are super cute/creepy. (myfeaturedcreature.com, $2.50-$15)

If they like Yankee Candles, then get them some scented soy candles from Jillian Says. Unlike commercially produced candles that come in dubious scents like “Season of Peace,” Jillian Says’ candles are scented like things that you actually know the scent of: rosemary, fresh-cut grass, Christmas tree, lemon verbena. All of the candles are made with real soy and cotton wicks, so no petroleum products or lead to poison your nose holes. (Available at Etoile Boutique, 2424 E. Robinson St. and Park Ave CDs, 2916 Corrine Drive or online at jilliansays.com. $2.50-$17.50)

If they trawl GigPosters.com searching out the latest band posters, try a locally designed and hand-screened poster from Lure Design. The pre-eminent design team for local coolness just made purchasing their wares easier by opening a storefront, so shoppers can peruse at leisure during business hours. Current selections include Low, Yeasayer, Wilco, Aidswolf, John Vanderslice and many more. (Lure Design, 1009 Virginia Drive, 407-895-5360, luredesigninc.com; $20-$100)

If they like manly, outdoorsy things like hunting and fishing, then get them a knife from Randall Made Knives, hand-crafted and sold right here in Orlando. The Randall knife company has been in business for 75 years, and the quality of their sporting, hunting and military knives is so legendary that the company was commissioned by NASA to create survival knives for astronauts to take with them on the first manned space flights in the 1960s. (Randall Made Knives, 4857 S. Orange Blossom Trail, 407-855-8075, randallknives.com. Prices vary, but most knives are $350-$475)
