There are roughly six weeks of great weather in Orlando, and OW’s Fall Guide aims to help you strategize how to get the best out of them. This is the time of year to take advantage of all those art walks – Orlando Museum of Art’s longstanding 1st Thursdays, downtown’s Third Thursday Gallery Hop, Thornton Third Thursdays, Ivanhoe Village’s First Fridays Art Stroll and countless others – not to mention all the outdoors art festivals.
Between now and Thanksgiving, the city puts its best foot forward, culturally, and fall 2011 promises a bumper crop of good stuff to look at. Rollins’ Cornell Fine Arts Museum continues its hot streak of excellence with an exhibition of nudes by the polymorphously perverse Texas painter Heyd Fontenot, tragi-whimsical watercolor portraits of “nontraditional” families by Ringling professor Kim Russo, and “Contested Object,” an installation that explores notions of ownership and acquisition. Also worthy of anticipation: the Pintura Project’s fourth graffiti conference; a series of workshops at DeLand’s Museum of Florida Art offering sessions on bookmaking and monotype printing; the House of Blues Folk Art Festival (part of Disney’s annual Festival of the Masters), a must-see for fans of outsider/visionary art, the Mennello’s newly unveiled Thomas Thorspecken mural – and a lot more, all of which can be found below. Keep reading.
