Unemployed Floridians are officially discouraged; Syria is a destroyed state?

Rebecca Rust, chief economist for Gov. Scott, really believes that the people who have stopped looking for work are doing that to go back to school and not because there aren’t any jobs around for them (“Nonpartisan report claims Florida’s unemployment is rising, not falling,” Sept. 11)? If they don’t have jobs to earn the money to pay their rent, utilities, food, etc., how the hell does she think they’ll pay for higher education?

[Statistician John] Williams’ ShadowStats Alternative unemployment rate includes “long-term discouraged workers,” a category the Bureau of Labor Statistics removed in 1994, under the Clinton administration, from the government’s unemployment measures. The BLS publishes six levels of unemployment, but only the headline U3 unemployment rate gets the press. The headline number does not count the “discouraged” workers who have not looked for work in the past four weeks because they believe no jobs are available.
The U6 unemployment rate is the BLS’s broadest measure. It includes those marginally attached to the labor force and the “underemployed,” those who have accepted part-time jobs but seek full-time employment. Also included are short-term discouraged workers who have not looked for work in the past year because there are no jobs to be found. Since 1994, however, the long-term discouraged workers, those who have been discouraged for more than one year, have been excluded from all government data.

Regardless of whether or not Obama joins Israel and drops a few kilotons of bombs on Syria (“Let Allah sort it out,” Sept. 10, blogs.orlandoweekly.com), his creating, training, supplying and arming the “Free Syrian Army” along with our Free World democratic allies Saudi Arabia, France, Qatar, Turkey and Jordan have turned Syria into a destroyed state.
