University plaza's bars and clubs re-opening in new locations

Knight Library

The demolition of UCF student partyplex University Shoppes Plaza began in November, reducing several popular clubs and watering holes to piles of rubble. Barring particularly devoted rapscallions lusting to swing from unmanned, moonlit cranes and bulldozers (personal experience speaking: don't do that), regulars of Lazy Moon, FUBAR, Scoop, Knights Library and others are suddenly in limbo, bereaved of their favorite nighttime haunts.

Sadly, some bars, like Underground Bluz, will never return. Others, however, are being replanted, and some of University Plaza's marquee attractions are finally reopening elsewhere.

You can't really grouse about missing Riot Wednesdays at Knight Library anymore, because the techno-frat temple has moved to 11448 University Blvd. to take over the old Houlihans building. The usual drink specials return – Two Dollar Pitcher Tuesdays, anyone? – so you can chug and spill to your heart's content, just like the glory days. College!

Lazy Moon, a beloved UCF staple for late-night pig-outs, is the latest leasee in the same plaza (1551 University Blvd.) as Jersey Mike's, Pei Wei, Jimmy John's and World of Beer and the new joint is nearing its soft opening. Lazy Moon (Part Deux? Son of Lazy Moon? Lazy Moon Jr.?) won't open until February, but when it does, expect many of the old staples – pizza slices the size of your head, to be sure – as well as some new options to be revealed.

And finally there's FUBAR, which has not offered much in the way of details about when and where it hopes to reopen. Mostly, we hear, this is because the bar requires a pretty massive space to accommodate its business model (that is, a bitchin' lighting rig, a thumpin' dance floor, and lots and lots of alcohol). Local clubs and bars have reportedly extended business offers to FUBAR to amalgamate their respective brands – marrying FUBAR's affable, popular image with, well, a physical venue – but we hear that management isn't biting.

Our sources tell us, however, that FUBAR insists that it'll settle on a space in time to open for UCF's fall 2013 semester. We'll keep you posted when we learn more.
