Tip Jar: local food news

Hash House a Go Go, Segafredo Café, East Orlando Beer Festival, Brooklyn Water Bagel Co. and more

Photo: , License: N/A

Back in early February, we reported that San Diego-based Hash House a Go Go will be opening an outpost on I-Drive. Now we know specifics: It’ll set up shop in the cavernous (and maybe jinxed?) locale most recently occupied by Matteo’s Ristorante Italiano. Let’s hope Brazilian tourists love “twisted farm food.” Opening date: April 16.

While piada sales thrive at the new Italio Modern Italian Kitchen in Winter Park, they’ve come to a screeching halt in Lake Mary. Piada & Piada, a great little Italian eatery on Lake Mary Boulevard, has closed its doors for good. I’ll really miss their hand-lever-operated brass Nuova Simonelli espresso machine.

Speaking of, if you’ve been to the Segafredo Zanetti Espresso Café in the Lincoln Road Mall on South Beach, you’ll be glad to know that the café will open its first Orlando location in Mills Park. According to Massimo Zanetti Beverage’s USA spokesman, Julio Ferreira, the café will open sometime in late August or early September.

The Waterford Lakes Town Center is the site for the 5th Annual East Orlando Beer Festival, taking place 1-5 p.m. Saturday, March 30. Paying guests will enjoy unlimited beer samples from the likes of Hourglass Brewery, Terrapin and Brooklyn Brewery, and unlimited food samples from Mellow Mushroom, Friendly Confines, Frank & Steins and more. Advance tickets are $25 ($35 at the door): floridabeerfestivals.com.

BRIEFLY:
Press 101 in Dr. Phillips has shut its doors for good. Where will the MILFs go for sandwiches now? … Mitchell’s Fish Market in Winter Park Village serves an Easter menu 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday, March 31, for $24.99 ($7.99 for children 12 and under) … Also in Winter Park, look for modern Mediterranean cuisine and a great wine list at Carmel Café, slated to open late spring/early summer … An Original Brooklyn Water Bagel Co. opens April 10 on Goldenrod Road near UCF. Their bagels use Brooklynized™ water, which is re-created Brooklyn tap water minus the good stuff – lead, fluoride and 24 strains of bacteria.
