Culture 2 Go: performing arts updates

OK, now that Halloween is over … who’s ready for Christmas? Wait, didn’t there used to be a holiday called Thanksgiving in between? Before you begin trimming the tree – or turkey, for that matter – take some time out to support some of these cultural efforts; we’re certain the artists involved will give thanks for your patronage.

You can simultaneously show your support for a local library and your favorite Time Lord (Baker, Eccleston, Tennant or Smith?) at the Winter Park Public Library’s WHOSTOCK Saturday, Nov. 16. Celebrate 50 years of Doctor Who with trivia, T-shirts and TARDIS-themed fun, to benefit WPPL.

Acme Superstore and the Central Florida Face and Body Painting Guild are teaming up Nov. 30 for a fundraiser supporting the family of Brian Wolfe, a local special-effects makeup artist who recently succumbed to pancreatic cancer. Beer and sangria are free with a $10 donation, and toy and art sales will help Wolfe’s wife and daughter handle the mountains of medical bills.

May is still six months away, but Orlando’s Fringe Festival season really starts Dec. 2 with Merry Fringein’ Christmas at Orlando Shakes. Attendees don’t just get an evening of entertainment, auctions and alcohol, all hosted by Michael Wanzie and Mitzi Morris – they’re also the first to know which performers have won the lottery for spots in the 2014 Fringe.

Venus in Fur at Mad Cow, through Nov. 17 … Santa’s Holly Follies at Pinocchio’s Marionette Theatre, through Nov. 27.

Cornerstone Theatre’s Assassins at Orlando Shakes, opens Nov. 14 … Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer: the Musical at Orlando Repertory Theatre, opens Nov. 14 … True Fans at the Abbey, opens Nov. 15 … Jester Theater’s The Big Oz at Orlando Shakes, opens Nov. 15 … Crazy for Gershwin at Winter Park Playhouse, opens Nov. 15 … A Year with Frog and Toad at Breakthrough Theatre, opens Nov. 15 … 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee at Rollins College, opens Nov. 15 … A Christmas Carol at Theatre Downtown, opens Nov. 29 … Wanzie’s A Trailer Trash Christmas at Parliament House, opens Nov. 30.
